I have Access 97 at work and 2000 at home. I cannot get 2000 to convert my 97 db to a 2000 db. I go to the tools and select convert db and select the db that I want to convert then select convert. I then rename the new db and select save. This is when I have a problem, I cannot locate the db. I have tried a search and tried to convert it again and no luck. Do I need to do anything in 97 before I take it home and try to convert it to 2000? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I converted a few Acess97 databases to Access2000 a while back (most were for classes such as statistics that used Access as a tool) and all I ever had to do was open 2000, then select the appropriate db from my hard drive. A screen comes up and tells you that it has to be converted and the process was pretty much automatic. I have a faint memory at the back of my soggy brain that says that the database converter located in tools is actually meant for converting other types of databases (i.e. other brand name dbs).

I would definitely try the above before pulling out my hair. The other thing to keep in mind, if I remember correctly is that you can't later convert the db back to Access97.

Hope this helps.

jays35,

The first time you open a 97 DB with 2000 it should give you the option to Cinvert it. Otherwise if you've tried to open the DB before and choose not to convert it, next time you open it the convert option in not availible and it says that you can make design changes.

To Convert 97 to 2000:
1. Open Access without opening a database (to a blank Access Menu Screen)
2. On the Menu Bar Choose Tools -> Database Utilities -> Convert Database -> To Current Access Database Ver...
3. Locate the File to Convert (97 Version)
4. Navigate to where to Save the new file
5. Enter the File Name to Save As

To Convert 2000 DB to 97:
1. Open the database in 2000 to be converted to 97
2. On the Menu Bar Choose Tools -> Database Utilities -> Convert Database -> To Prior Access Database Ver...
3. Navigate to where to Save the new file
4. Enter the File Name to Save As

When converting to Prior Version, don't forget that the newer features of 2000 may not work in 97. I don't know what all they'd be, but if you are just doing Record Updates you should be fine. But play it safe and ALWAYS keep a back!!!

Thanks for all the help. I am trying to learn on my own and this makes it a lot easier. Can 97 and 2000 be ran on the same machine?
