convert to raid

Hello All

At present I have a single sata 160g HDD system with 5 partitions and would like to get another HDD and set up Raid 0.

My question is, can I do this and use my complete system backup disc, made with Acronis 10, to put on the Raid 0 array.

I have an Asus A8N-SLI (basic)NForce4 MB. Athlon 64 3500 E processor and 1gig ram (soon to be 2gig)

Are you sure you want to do RAID 0? why would you want to double the chance of failure and data loss just to get more space, especially since you already have partitions it doesn't sound like you just want a 320 gig C:

Also if that motherboard does support hardware Raid it will erase the data off all drives before building the raid so make sure you have a good backup!

I agree with SeanAIX430 about the lack of redundancy in RAID 0 (RAID 0 really should really be called AID 0) being a dangerous move. I would recommend RAID 5 which requires 3 drives at a minimum and allows any one of the drives to fail with no data loss.

To answer your question, yes, you can create a RAID 0 array from an Acronis or Ghost image. You will need another drive the same size as the original to create an image to, then create the array and recover the image.

Thanks guys for the response.

Seems like I have some researching/reading to do before jumping into this as I am not that familiar with raid.

My main worry was being able to restore my system to its present state from a good backup and not start over with reinstalling everything.
