Convert File Format on .wpd File

Anyone else out there experience this problem? Trying to open wordperfect document with .wpd extension and the convert file format dialog box comes up. The file was created and saved just a few days ago in WordPerfect. I assume when that box comes up that WordPerfect does not recognize the format of the file that is being opened. I guess that means the file has been corrupted in some manner. Anyone else experience this & what did you do to correct it?

I am having the same problem as you. In this forum there are answers regarding enabling "indexing" of the files. If you are using Windows 2000 with NTFS partitions, this seems to be a common problem. What you should try is RIGHT click on the partition that has your wordperfect documents and choose to index. If index is already chosen, UNcheck it, reboot and then go back and check it again. I just did this today on my network server where all my WP docs reside. I am hoping this resolves my problem as well. Good Luck! Let me know!!

This is a Windows 98 computer, so no NTFS. Even more bizarre is the fact that I can use Microsoft Word to open the very WordPerfect document with no problem. Go figure. I am using this instance to convince the user to switch to Word over WordPerfect.

I tried to open my WP doc in Word as well, I only get "boxes", no text. Not sure if NTFS has anything to do with that or not, just wanted you to know that it didn't work for me. Don't be too quick to make the change from Wordperfect to Word.

I am fighting making the change because Word isn't able to many formatting things that Wordperfect can do. I work at a law firm and those formatting abilities are important so I don't want to change. Plus, Word doesn't have "quick words" which I use daily and I would miss my macros. I've created so many legal macros over the years that cannot be converted to Word macros.

Has the .wpd extension been accidently associated with an application other than WordPerfect? Take a look in My Computer - View - Folder Options - File Types.

No, the .WPD is still associated with WordPerfect. This is only happening on 2 files and there are dozens of WordPerfect documents saved on this one computer.

no, the wpd association has not changed in folder options. Believe me! that was first place I looked. I even tried to change it to a .txt or .doc, just to see if I could open it. No such luck! Once I get an "unsupported file format" the document is essentially gone.

I've gotten some advice from a few techs I know, as well as MIcrosoft, who say that it seems as if saving onto the server may be dropping packets on the network. We've made a few changes and starting 5/30/03, we'll see if those changes make a difference. I will know probably in a week or so. I'll let you know too!

I'm also wondering if there has been any progress on this problem. I transferred my wpd files from an ntfs volume and thought it was a nt security problem. However, the wpd files in certain folders were unharmed but the main wpd folder has all files giving this unsupported file format message. Any help would be appreciated.

I had success opening in Word 2k. There is a special formating piece that needs to be installed. When asked to install, locate the Office 2K CD, or the location of it on the network, and install. The document will then open up. Since I don't know what the WP formatting looked like, I can't tell if it transfered over. I am able to view the words though.

Have tried to open .wpd in Word 2000 using the file format conversion feature. Document opens with all squares but no format or text.

I spent time on the phone with Corel tech support, and they disclaimed all knowledge of this problem. Yeah, right.

So, I've been looking at some other tech sites to see if there have been any solutions. I found one thread that seems to have a pretty definitive answer to the problem. The moderator said: “You need SP4, which fixed several bugs and is essential for Win2K.” This was in a thread which described the exact problems we've been having: random, corrupted WP files with the unsupported format box.

In our office, the main people who had the problem were working with WP 9.x (which is what SP4 updates). We've just ordered upgrades for all our computers to take us to WP11. I suspect the only way for us to tell if it works is if there are no future corrupted files, which will take a while to track. I'll post back if we think the problem is fixed.

There are a ton of posts on WP Universe about this problem, and while I haven't read through all of them, this was the first time it sounded like the person knew the problem and the solution.

Just wanted to say that I had a similar problem that occurred after I reformatted the HD and reinstalled Wordperfect Office 2002. Problem was that the conversion utilities were not installed (for some reason) in my initial reinstallation. Wordperfect was able to open my newer files, but not older ones created with older versions of WP. After installing the conversion utilities from the CD, the problem disappeared.

Just wanted to follow up to my previous post: a month ago, we upgraded everyone in our office to WP11. Nobody in our office has had the corruption problem since.

At the same time we upgraded, we also switched our server to Microsoft Exchange. I don't know if this had any effect on the problem resolution, but felt I should at least mention it. My guess is that it had more to do with the upgrade to the software than the server itself.

There is, indeed, an obscure sub-component of the WordPerfect Suite installation that may not have been installed by default. It is not necessary to remove and reinstall, but I would recommend re-running installation and selecting "Add new components" or something simliar. Just add pretty much everything (not all fonts though...leave those as default)...it shouldn't hurt your PC at all, but it will take up a little more hard drive space. After that, you should be able to open the documents. Alternatively, you may try opening them in Microsoft Office, which seems to sometimes do a better job of opening Corel files than Corel does. After that, you can turn around and re-save the document, first converting it to WordPerfect format.
