NW 7.2.1 on Windows server 2003.

Is it possible to convert an exsisting NW Server to become a Storage node and set up a new NW Server ?

Easy enough.

It's possible to rehost your Networker server, procedures for that are well-established.

After that, just remove the Networker software from the original server, reinstall it as a Storage Node, do the necessary configs on the new server, and go to town.

There is even an easier way: disable the nsrd.exe daemon by disabling the "NW backup and recover service".

Is it possible to transfer the indexes to the new server, so the backups which have been done on the server which is to become the storage node can still be restotred?

I am not sure. You may try to recover the index backups on the new server. I guess it should work.

ah-so 605, but if you merely disable the nsrd.exe daemon on the "old" server, will the server then know that it is supposed to be a storage node to another server, or will its nsrexec's still try to connect back to itself?

Well, the host will knows that it is not running as server. The only thing you may have to adjust is the servers file.

A client becomes a SN automatically,
- if the SN software has been installed and
- if a remote device on this node has been defined
