When you launch Control Panel, it looks through your system directory and finds all the CPL files. Normally these would be in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.
1. So, what you can do is perform a search (Find) and look for all the *.CPL files in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.
2. Now, either move all of these files to another temporary folder of rename them all by changing CPL to say CP1. Ignore MAIN.CPL though, it is required.
3. Fire up Control Panel. Without the offending CPL file it should work fine and you will only see a few icons.
4. Move back or rename each CPL file back to the original location/name and with the Control Panel still open, hit F5 to refresh. Do this for each CPL file, one at a time. When you hit the offending CPL file, you will know what is causing the Control Panel to freeze.

Good luck dianosing the problem. Now, once you find the culprit, you will either have to do something with it. Either forget about the CPL file or remove the offending software that created the CPL file on your system.
Ian Cowie
ianco@email.com

"If you see something THIS big, with eight legs, coming your way, let me know.
