Seems I can't access my display icon in control panel... because there isn't any, or by right clicking on properties. When I right click properties nothing happens.I would like to change my resolution on my monitor.Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Are you saying that the Display window does not appear when you right click on the Desktop, and then click on Properties?

could be that the "desk.cpl" file was renamed or deleted. or maybe the desktop properties were set in the registry not be viewed to avoid changes. is this an office pc? what os?

hope this helps. peace! [peace]

Ski..The Display icon doesn"t appear in control panel, plus when I click on properties after double clicking desk top, nothing happens. In control panel the only Icon nearest to display is desktop themes??? thanks. torturedmind....It's A home P.C. IBM. Win 98 SE. The monitor that came with it died, and I got a Gateway ev 700 from a buddie, works fine except I cant access any way to change anything, i.e. resolution.

Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders, type desk.cpl in the 'Named' box, select your hard drive in the 'Look In' box, and click 'Find Now'.

If that file appears, then make sure it's installed in the C:\Windows \System folder.
If it's in a different folder, then move it back to the above folder.

If the desk.cpl file does not appear, then type in desk.*
If a file appears that has the name desk but has an extension other then .cpl, then right click on it, click Rename, and change the extension to cpl(Ex.- if desk.old appears, then change it to desk.cpl).

If nothing appears after entering desk.*, then type in *.cpl, and post back with the files that are listed.
It's possible that the 'desk' name of the desk.cpl file was changed to something else.

If all of the .cpl files that you post back look ok, then the desk.cpl file may have been deleted, or is corrupt.
If you have a Windows installation CD, then you can restore that file using 'System File Checker'.
If you do not have a Windows install CD and you have access to another Win 98 system, then you can either burn the desk.cpl to a CD, or copy it to a floppy, and manually install it onto your system.

Ski.. The file must have been corrupt! Went to SFC and restored file diskw95.cpl to c:/win/system, and wa-la it worked, now have display icon in control panel, and can access settings for resolution and everthing else..But still can't get anything from desk top-{Properties},oh well at least I can do what I need to do....Thanks for the help

You're welcome.

Forgot that desk.cpl is named deskw95.cpl on the Windows install CD.

See if renaming deskw95.cpl to desk.cpl gets back the option to open the Display window by right clicking on the Desktop, and clicking Properties.
