I have installed backup exec several times on two windows 2000 servers, Backup exec will work for about a month, then just stop communicating with the internal stand alone dlt drive. I then have to uninstall the software and reboot the server to install it again, I set up the the software again, backup exec will work just fine then it will stop communicating with the drive after about 1 month to 2 months. This all happens without making any changes to the drive or the software, I dont reboot the server unless this happens....Does this happen to anyone else or know what the problem is? Does veritas have a problem with windows service pack 3?

In the event viewer the error is referring to the driver of the tapedrive, bnchtape. the error is- the driver detected a controller error on \device\Tape0.

Iam using veritas's drivers, the tape drive is installed and working properley in the device manager.

I have even tried slowing the speed of the controller to see if that would fix the problem, it doesnt.

Bottom line is that if i restart the server everything will be fine, but I shouldnt have to do that every other month or so. I'am starting to believe that these dell powervault dlt 110t's are the problem.

Here is the last log of the last backup before the crash..

you stated that you only reboot the server if this happens... i have a feeling that rebooting would solve the problem - no need to uninstall and reinstall. note the message says
"the driver detected a controller error on \device\Tape0"

Nothing about the software... actually, the software is doing what it's supposed to: report the error that the driver detected.

Here's another article from veritas' site which addresses all manner of hardware/scsi problems:
If this doesn't solve it, there are a ton of related docs at the bottom of the article.

Good luck!

hope this helps.

arson- Did you ever get this i/o error problem resolved? I have the exact same problem. I made the registry change indicated by Veritas but backups still fail on verify. It happens on the final drive. Suggestions?
