Didn't find this exact question and other questioners didn't want to do this.

Is this possible? Without VBA? -- It probably is with, but I don't have the chops to handle it and there's no other resource.

Do you know if it is possible to create a numbered list/outline that keeps numbering in order even when indented instead of beginning at 1 over and over as indented? This will indent and go back to the left margin in irregular increments and there are as many as 700 items in the list so "continue numbering with/at x" isnt' feasable. We need it to look like this:

1. First line
2. second
3. third
4. fourth
5. next item
6. about this item
7. more about it
8. next item

etc...

It is for a strange document and we really do want it like this! :) There are a ton of numbers. We don't want to have to do it by hand and risk having to re-number everything by hand if something changes. I have been digging around in the customization area for outlining and for styles, but can't seem to customize my way to workability.

Any information appreciated!

Thanks!
Monique

Hi Monique,

1. I guess from "it is for a strange document" that we're talking about a Word file.
2. From "Do you know if it is possible to create a numbered list/outline that keeps numbering in order even when indented instead of beginning at 1 over and over as indented?" I guess that you want 700 consecutive paragraphs in this document to be numbered consecutively even thought they are indented.

Paragraphs in a Word document can be numbered in several ways. My absolute favourite is to put a field in front. Although this is more cumbersome than the other nice and handy Word features I prefer it as the results are predictable.

So, I'd suggest:
- you put a numbering field at the beginning of each paragraph. You have the choice between {SEQ yadda}-fields and {AutoNum}-Fields. After you decided which one suits you most this can easily be done with SearchAndReplace.
- Before, of course, the old "numbering" will have to be removed. But I've no "absolute" idea how this can be done. Probably you will have to do this manually. But I don't know.

HTH anyway.

Markus

Thanks, Markus! I'll give that strategy a look.

Hi,
What I did to try to fix this was to create a new multi-level list in Word 2007 or later using "1)" as the formatting for each level. Then, after applying it to my list, I use the TAB key to indent. After indenting, right click and start the numbering at whatever value I want with the Set Numbering Value choice.

HTH,
