we are on a network .. using exchange 5.5 on the server and ms outlook 2000 on the client pc's..one of my colleagues has come back after being on holiday for a week and found that the contents of his inbox have all gone. We really don't think that another member of staff would have done that..any ideas, remedies???? please?

I don't know Outlook 2000 - but a couple of Outlook 98 suggestions ...

- Has he checked Deleted Items?
- Has he tried 'Tools\Recover Deleted Items' from within the Delete Items folder?

- There is a registry edit that will enable the Recover Deleted Items command from folders other than the Deleted Items folder. This allows you to retrieve items hard deleted (ie shift deleted) from folders. I've only used it with Outlook 98 however - not sure if it is relevant to Outlook 2000

To enable Deleted Item Recovery on mail folders other than Deleted Items (such as Sent Items, Drafts, Outbox, and Inbox), the following registry entry needs to be made:

Add the DWORD value DumpsterAlwaysOn=1 to the following registry key of the administrator's Outlook client:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Exchange\Client\Options

Once this is added, the Recover Deleted Items command will be available from the Tools menu in any Outlook folder.
I've used it to recover many a staff member's accidentally shift deleted inbox.

I don't know, maybe it will help.

Good luck

no, i dont think its been deleted as such...i think it may be exchange server..another colleague has the same problem this morning :( help...?! they're losing important stuff!

Check with your exchange server administrator. Perhaps the retention rules are enabled to delete items more than "x" days from 'sent date'? (My company invokes a 30 day rule)...just a thought.

Did he check his email while on vacation? If he did, check the machine that he used, it could be he set his delivery to a pst folder on that machine.

Has he got the view set to Last Seven Days? If he has it will not show previous e-mails.

May be he has applied a filter condition for display only unread messages, or may be during his absense someone might have read those messages.
