I have cable internet with a router that has 2 computers hooked to it. Every so often, sometimes every 30 minutes or so and other times once or twice a day, we lose our signal and have to unplug the electrical to the router and reset our computers. We don't have to do anything to the internet cable itself, just the electrical. I'm running XP so mine resets automatically but my wife is on W98 and has to go through the msconfig routine.

What's happening and whats causing this?

could be MANY things. first off when the service goes down do you ever notice that the modem resets or if the lights start "flashing" on it? if so, that would mean SOMETHING is causing your internet signal to drop therefore when it comes back up you then need to reset the router. even if you down't notice that it still may be the issue. if the modem don't go offline ever, then it must be a setting in your router that needs checking. you can call your internet support and they should be able to tell you if the modem is going off and online and more details about its (your modem) downtime. hope it helps. None of the lights flash that aren't already flashing (data light on the cable modem). As soon as I unplug and immediately replug the electrical, it works again.

unfortunatly, there is really nothing anyone here can do to help except give advise on when to call your ISP's tech support. cable internet is reliant on the rf signal to the modem way too much. from what you've said so far, it could be the signal dropping or bad SNR. however, it could be your network setup. meaning do you have NAT running or is all pc's getting DHCP from your ISP? by running a simple test like plugging only one pc in directly to the modem for a couple of days to see if the problem occures like that. if not, its router settings. if so, its either DHCP or signal to the modem problems. feeling free to ask any questions you may have or to give as much of your network settings as you can. I was having this problem with my Cox cable. I called to report the drops and resyncs required (power cycling the router). They did not sound helpful on the phone, but the problem mysteriously disappeared within the next two days and has not come back since.
