I'm out of ideas and am hoping someone will consider something I'm not.

I have two computers on which the sound is ALWAYS muted. The taskbar icon indicates that the sound is NOT muted, yet, the Sounds and Audio Devices cpl has "Mute" checked. Any attempt to alter it's state or volumn will result in it reverting to muted. Other machines of percisely the same hardware (HP BC1500) do not have this problem.

Any general ideas?

I can't believe it. A Windows update actually fixed something and broke nothing...

From my experience, this is the outcome 99.5% of the time for most people. Yes - some people get hosed by an update, but I haven't seen it very much.

Now if you're talking about a driver update, I don't let MS do those. I've seen worse results there. I do driver updates manually.

So, was it a Microsoft KB type of update or a driver update??
