Consistent disconnections on a Linksys BEFSR41 router with PPTP

Hello friends,

I have a Linksys BEFSR41 DSL/Cable router connected to an Alcatel STHome ADSL modem. The configuration is of a PPTP protocol (WAN miniport). Finally, I was able to make it work, however, I loose connection about something like 1 minute after establishing a connection; each time. [sadeyes]

I'm really desperate.

Spent hours upon hours with the Linksys tech. support, and my ISP's tech. support. Went through the FAQs. Called a dozen friends, but still can do nothing to make the connection STABLE.

What could it be??

Please, post your ideas. I could really use a good piece of advice now. [bigears]

Looking forward to reading your replies, and hopefully fixing this problem.

P.S. - I noticed that when set to "Auto Negotiation" my network adapters connect at 100 Mbps. Even when I try to "force" a 10 half duplex connection on them, the router somehow overrides this manual configuration. The thing is, no only that it's always a good idea to try and set it to 10 half duplex to fix occuring problems, but I also noticed that when connected directly to the computer (without the router) my modem will NOT connect at all when the local area connection is at 100 Mbps; only when I lower it to 10 half duplex it can connect successfully to the internet.

So I'm thinking, maybe forcing a 10 Mbps connection on the LAN will stop the disconnections? Only I've been unable to do so. Any idea how to PERMANENTLY set it to 10 Mbps for the whole network?

THANK YOU!!

Simon.

The Version 1 and 2 BEFSR41 at 10 mb. at the WAN port, and autonegotiate the client connection at the LAN port.

Version 3 of the router autonegotiates both WAN and LAN ports.

I do not see an issue with negotiation here as the root of your problem. If you do believe you have one, connect the modem to a switch, and the router to the switch, and let the switch negotiate the connection.

My router is version 3 with the latest firmware (1.04.8) installed. I've been able to fix the auto-negotiating, neverltheless, the constant disconnections linger on.

This option in the Linksys router is only for connection to certain European ISPs. In the case where ISPs support this method of connection (and BT is not one of them), they provide the data for you to enter here.

If you are trying to create a PPTP tunnel to a VPN server, then you cannot use a BEFSR41 as a PPTP client end-point. The BEFSR41 does support PPTP pass-through, if you create a PPTP client end-point on one of your PCs: but in this case only that PC (not your entire LAN) can use the tunnel.

Hi,
Got the same problem with Linksys BEFW11S4 and Alcatel Speed-touch ADSL modem. The connections stops after 1 minute, BUT.., restarts after 4 minites, then stops after one miniute again, etc, etc,

Anyone solved this problem already?
Jan

Probably not the case, but I had disconnection problems due to typing the IP address of a computer that didn't exist, in the logging feature of the router. Its probably not the case for you guys.

jgraaf, can you give config details?

Matt J.

Hi,
Solved the problem by "upgrading" the Alcatel modem to the pro version. The modem now connects by itself (PPP)to the provide and the linksys is set to static routing. With sip-spoofing (modem option) my provider IP address is linked to the WAN port of the linksys.
It works fine for a week now.
The problem seems to be craused by a proprietary implementation of Dutch-PTT/Alcatel ADSL, which causes PPTP not to work properly.
