I am putting together a proposal for Mail server software.

I have researched Lotus Notes, Microsoft Exchange and Groupwise but I am finding it difficult to choose between the three.

I would very much appreciate some unbiased comments on which would be the best choice.

The agency that I work for purchased Lotus Notes for our system, and I personally wish that they hadn't. We have had major trouble getting Lotus Notes to talk to existing DB2 databases on Legacy mainframes, as well as having problems finding training or 3rd party reference materials. With only a minor portion of the overall market, few authors, schools (college, tech, overwise), or even websites support Lotus Notes. If you have enough money to purchase from the few sources that are available or send people off to the available schools, maybe this isn't a problem, but I feel that it has been a problem for us. I will admit that our agency is in the early stages of growing with "modern" software, but I would feel more comfortable with MS Exchange, Outlook, etc. This is only one person's opinion, so take it for what it is worth.

Since I've only used Notes, I can only give the opinion of that. But since I'm the only administrator at our company of 1000+ users, that pretty much should tell you how much maintenance it needs. Beside the occasional glich here and there, I'm glad to have Notes especially with all the viruses aimed at MS. [sig][/sig]

Look at the FAQ faq73-132 . I've answered some of your questions there.

I've done more R5 deployments than I care to think about.

I know nothing about notes but we were interested in the Knowledge Management features it says it has.

For those who run notes do they have threads and forums like this wesite we talk on? How does it work? Does everyone use it?

A friend of mine said access is hard if you are on the road or at a client. Virtually making it something you don't use all the time.

Any other thoughts?
