I just installed xp pro and set all my tcp/ip and dns stuff as i normally do in 98. the machine will not go out my default gateway ip address, it times out, in either ie or opera and it will not connect to my mail server using ip addressing, or the "mail.mydomain" addressing. I can ping thru the gateway, and it will dns thru the gateway at the command prompt and I can ping the ip of my internal mail server. I have static ip's for all my machines, I also have an nt box that is just being used as a file server. I know the hardware is good, because I can hot swap my c drive between os's and it is all good in '98se

Check to see if the XP Firewall is blocking your connection.

xp firewall is disabled at this time. any other suggestions?

I have a similar problem.

I'm using the Alcatel Speedtouch USB ADSL modem to connect to the internet. After a system crash I had to reboot my system. Ever since I haven't been able to visit any sites on the internet.

However I can ping to any IP adres and Kazaa keeps running like nothing happened. I tried to manually set the DNS server, reinstalled the driver and the internet connection to skynet (my provider), nothing worked. I really don't know what to do next.

I've also a triple boot to Windows 98 and Linux, and in those operating systems there is no problem at all.

Any suggestions?

Seems my problem is solved. Zonealarm seemed to be the problem. When I shutted down ZA I had no problem at all browsing, when I turned it on again, the connection was blocked.

So I uninstalled and reinstalled zone-alarm and haven't had any problems since.
