Hello,

Can anyone shed some light on why my network comes and goes?

I have a win 2000 server, which has a NIC to a LAN, there is then a cable which runs to a Wireless access point! Then each 5 XP Pro machines have a 22mbps wireless card in them. All of which have over 70% Quality and strength!!!!

So every now and again (5-10 minutes) there seems to be a drop in connection over the whole network! We use a booking system and its forever crashing due to the network. I was transferring a 150mb file from one PC to another, all was fine, but just at the last minute it said the following: "Network is no longer available" which then followed by a voice from the other room "the booking system crashed on me again"

I just can’t figure it out. Out internet connection is fine so its no a wireless connection thing, so I guess it might be something else...

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for looking,

Neil

I have a similar problem . Ihave a win2k router past a linksys router , and everytime the 2000 box boots up i have to enable the card connected to the linksys router , its fine for 5 minutes and then after that it's no good . Ihave poked around in DHCP , TCP/IP , R/RASS , DNS looked around in event viewer and nothing comes up with a problem
So i decided to edeit the mac address from my servers nic and put it in the mac address clone for the linksys router , And its been fine . To also add i checked my route from the linksys router and made sure it was fine Its a static route . Then off to the 2000 server , and made sure i had the correct route table and made sure that my route was persistant as well . So far so good , I also came up with a dns server issue and resolved that as well .

Have you checked your frequencies for the network cards?
Do you have any cordless phones with close to the same frequency in the building anywhere? I ran into this problem a while back, drove me nuts too.

Hum ?

We have a cordless phone which during the day at work is turned off! However the handset is on (only used as an answer phone at night) maybe the handset sends out a signal now and again looking for the base station to the handset?

Could this be a possibility?

The main problem is with the PC that is nearest the phone! Now and again it looses the wireless connection so I have to disable the NIC and re-enable it. It then start working fine - - until the next time!

I will check it out, but if anyone has another idea I would lave to hear them.

Anthony, what is the mac address? I am VERY new to server and networks, so some of the terms don’t mean anything to me!

Cheers

some 900mhz and 2.4ghz phones are reported to mess with wireless networks. I would suggest moving the phone to another location or trying a landline model and see if that helps.

For that matter, in the booklet that came with my cordless, it said it can possibly cause issues if installed in close proximity to routers etc...... Good luck, and Happy Computing

its the phyiscal address built in to a nic card media access control address its a number that would look like this 00-03-05-c6-05-12 when you click on your nic cards proportiesjust put the mouse on the name of the card and give it a second it will give you that address or go into dos and type in ipconfig /all ! The reason i said this is because isp's sometimes register that address for your personal machine so if buy chance your first nic was and had been used online before you got a router like lets say a linksys you could place that address in the MAC address boxes !
