I haved an computer being used as printer server with HP Desktop printer attached.

The guest account is enabled. The printer is shared and others can access it, at least until they shutdown for the day. Then the next day I have to go to Network Neighborhood on each computer, click on the PC that has the printer attached, and enter the username and password for that computer. Everything is ok after that.

How can I get other computers to stop losing their connection to this printer server when they shutdown. [sig][/sig]

I don't know if I can help ya more than the other people here, but are you saying you install the printer drivers locally on each machine by using the ADD PRINTER WIZARD for a NETWORK PRINTER, and when the SAME user logs back in the next day the printer is gone? Yup. But the printer isnt gone. It still shows up, but their connection is lost. [sig][/sig]

Edit the Printer.ini file. If you don't have a printer.ini file, create one. Open notepad and save it under printer.ini. You could go to another Windows NT machine and look for Printer.ini file. Once you create the file make sure you put the printer name in that file. Thanks,
Russell

I had this problem years ago. . .on a network without a server. NT peer to peer. The solution I used was to create user accounts for each person on the "print server" user account list. Never had trouble again. . .

I have a problem very similar to this one. I run a pure NT 4 network. Users who logon to the domain can access the print server. Users who logon as a work group can not access the print server. A dialoug box, "Network Password" pops up. Once the user puts in a user name that exists on the print server they can access the server all day. As soon as the user logoffs the connection/permission to use the server is lost. I think it's a problem in "Peer to peer networking" on the print server but I'm not sure where to look first.

Hi All,

dm7941 solution is recommended to enable access to the printer in a workgroup environment.

The reason is that all access rights are handled by each individual NT machine in the workgroup, so if the user is also a user in the machine, then by default they can access and use the printer.

On a domain, the access rights is handled by the Domain Controller, therefore if the user have the correct rights, then they would be able to access the printer.

I think I've found a work around for the printer connection disappearing when the user logs off.
I searched the Microsoft Knowledge base for Printer connection problems. I found Q154738 which states if a computer can map a drive to another computer an use "connect as" with a local user on the workstation a presistant connection can be maintained.
I created a user on the server called "printer" I mapped a drive from The users computer to the print server
this required putting the user name "Printer" in the "connect as" box. This way I only need a single user id from the print server to gain access to the server. Once you check the reconnect at logon box, every time my user logs on the workstation maps a drive and the user can access the printer.
It's a lot easier remembering one user ID to map a drive then to create a user id on the server for everybody.
your mileage may vary.
