Attempting to run a backup on a client and receving status code 23. The backup server runs HP-UX and Veritas 6.0. The client is windows 2000. I tested the connection from the backup server using telnet clientname bpcd and I'm able to connect but after about 5 seconds I receive connection closed by foreign host. We have the no-connect back option select I believe. Still getting used to Veritas 6 but I have the following options configured for no connect back-BPCD connect back=VNETD port, Ports=reserved ports,Daemon connection port=use default connection options. There is a firewall involved here for this client and in the past I have seen the need to on the client put in the hosts file the public ip of the firewall for the backup server(to help with the issue of NAT) but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Anyone ever experience when telnet client bpcd the error "connection closed by foreign hosts"?

To Smicro

This is most commonly because something else has grabbed the bpcd port from netbackup. To check this do the below

1. On the client create the bpcd log in <install path>\netbackup\logs\
2. Make sure that the bpcd area is clean so you can log just the problem
3. On the master and/or media server telnet to the client on the bpcd port 13782
4. Do you get a connection or a could not connect?
5. assuming you get a connection but get an immediate drop proceed to step 6
4. Go back on the client and into the bpcd directory
5. do you see a log here? if not this confirms that netbackup's bpcd is not what is listening on port 13782
6. It should also be noted that some vpn clients can cause the immediate telnet bpcd drop and you can check that on windows clients by checking the protocols in msinfo32

Other things to consider would be if there is a firewall between the master/media and client and name resolution
