Is there any way to connect two modems directly togther, without routing it through the phone company?

Not really. i suppose you could use a tone-dial generator that companies use to train their phone people, but i think it would be too much effort. if all you're after is a serial link, get a crossover serial cable. This cable connects the two machines together via the serial port; not exactly quick, but it`ll get you there. if you want a network connection, its probably best to get a couple of ethernet cards and a crossover cable.

thats what I thought

PC Anywhere was being given away free but I can't recall if it was the full version or just an upgrade. Check out downloads.com
