Hi I have a wireless D-Link 604+ router, at present firewall on the router has been disabled. I have a static IP address (80.111.111.1) provided by my ISP on a 2Mb broadband link.

I basically want to Access my computer at home from office or anywhere, how do i do that?

At present I have enabled port redirection so that incoming packets from outside (80.111.111.1)get directed to my computer on IP 192.x.x.128

I disabled my windows XP Pro firewall and tried to logon to my computer via remote destop connection, got this error:
Protocol error detected at the client (code 0x1104)

What other windows services do i need to configure before i can successfully log on to my home network from anywhere?

Regards
Bobby

I think there is an exception for Remote Desktop in the Windows firewall so you don't need to disable the whole thing for it to work. Also, make sure you have Remote Desktop enabled in your System properties (right-click My Computer, Properties, Remote tab). If you can't get that to work, look into a tool called Remote Administrator, or Radmin for short. It's inexpensive and works like a charm.

Bobby,
can I make a little suggestion for future reference, don 't post your external IP address and hide your internal. Not just info for yourself, but for others as well. Chances are if it's a 192.x.x.x it's most likely to be 192.0.0.x.

To be honest we didn't even need you IP address to help you on this. I suggest you get you firewalls on pretty sharpish.

Good luck in resolving the issue however.

Hi Guys,

I'm still having problems I can't basically establish a connection with my computer within the LAN. I've created a Port redirection to my computers internal IP address, terminal services on the computer have been started, Firewalls are ON.

So finally i installed LogMeIn software and its working fine, but I still don't know why I can't login directly over the internet, ideally thats what i'd like to do.

Why not download and install UltraVNC on your home machine. You can then open the ports on the router and by using the UltraVNC client you will be able to connect across the internet.

Remember to setup a good strong password on VNC, especially seeing that you have provided everyone with your external ip address. lol.

You dont need any third party tools.

Remote Desktop will work just fine. Assuming you have XP Pro on your PC though, as with XP Home you can only remote FROM that pc, not TO that pc. (Hope that makes sense).
If you have XP Pro, make sure that REMOTE DESKTOP is enabled under My computer > Properties > Remote.

Next you need to point port 3390 (Default Remote Desktop Port) (on your router) to the IP of your PC that you want to accept the remote connection.

Then from someplace out on the net (A friends house, or whatever), open remote desktop and enter the IP address that is assigned to your router.

This should let you in just fine.

If you have Windows Firewall ON, then you need to poke a hole for port 3389.

An easy way to figure out if its a firwall issue, is to simply turn if off, follow my above instructions and try to connnect. If it works, then tweak your firewall until you get the right combination.

Good Luck

Joshua
