Connecting to user account in Active Directory

I don't know why I always have a problem with this. Guess I just don't understand how it works. I have a username, and I am trying to connect to that account in AD. I need to update the account with information. Can someone please type out and explain if possible my different options for binding to that user? I am not able to use a distinguished name in this case.... thanks for any help.

how are you trying to connect? (a comptuer on the network or though something like a vpn tunnel)
