hi,

i have just installed solaris 8 on a machine which is on a proxied network.
Does anyone know what steps i have to go through inorder to connect to my proxy to use the internet.

I have set the /etc/defaultrouter to my proxies address. I also cannot get to the proxy setting of my browser which should come up when i click the advance tab. Does my proxy server need to be down for this.

Also i was browsing around in the /.netscape folder and notice a file called lonindep.dat, which when i opened cotained a session id which was my proxy address and a client id which was empty, so i input my machines ip address, and then i could ping to my proxy. Can someone tell what i actually did there, and what that file does.

What other solutions are there to my problem and is this common with solaris 8.

Thanks

For Netscape, to set your proxy choose Edit, Preferences then click on Advanced. This gives you several options - one of which is to enter manually the address of the proxy server and port number.

...or have I just missed the point... ?

Cheers,

If you are connecting to the internet through a proxy server or firewall, you need to point your gateway to that interface. (i.e. defaultrouter) in /etc.

Make sure that the proxy server or firewall has the correct ports open (i.e. 80 HTTP and 443 HTTPS 20,21 FTP).

You should be able to browse the internet with the IP address. This is a test to see if you can connect to the internet through the proxy.

If the test to the internet works than you need to setup DNS. Here is a sample config for DNS.

create a resolv.conf file in /etc with the following information:
domain <domain name>
nameserver <primary>
nameserver <secondary>

Once you have created this file than edit the nsswitch.conf file as follows.

hosts: files dns

You can reboot and shoulkd be able to browse the internet.

Let me know if this is what you need and if it is helpful.

Thanks,
