Now this is a very very basic question for most of you I would think as I am a home user =).

My ISP is having peering problems between the ISP and the site I am trying to reach, however I know I can by-pass these problems by changing my path over the internet via VPN Server. I have a friend who has set-up a basic VPN Server in Windows XP and I have set up a Windows XP VPN Client to tunnel through his computer.

In order for me to be able to use the internet via his VPN Server I understand that I have to have the box under Properties -> Networking -> TCP/IP -> Properties -> Advanced -> "Use Default Gateway on Remote Network" check off.

The problem is that I can connect to his VPN Server however I can then not use the internet or anything else that connects to the internet.

What must my friend change in his Windows XP VPN Server settings to allow me to connect to the internet? If you could list all of the possible changes he needs to make so we could attempt them 1 by 1 it would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance for the help.

run ipconfig /all and tell me what shows up as your gateway when you connect to the VPN.

XP is not designed to be a router so that you only establish a peer to peer VPN. One thing your friend may try is enable IP routing. These search results may help,

Cjtweedy/msworld,

..i aint following a lot of this

..but if you only need that XP box to route between subnets you can do a simple registry hack ..below..

..and you use route statements in cmd.exe like below..

route add -p 192.168.1.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.100.1 metric 1
route add -p 192.168.2.0 mask 255.255.255.0 192.168.100.1 metric 1
...use the -p as the p is for persistant and will not go away when you reboot..

......i hope i'm not way off here...
