Connecting to terminal through regular PC

Hello again,
Is there anything out there that I can get or do so that I can administer from my pc and make changes to the stations and stuff as if I was at the actual terminal. I know terronova or a software of that sort can do it, but I was wondering if there is any other way of doing it for cheaper.

Once I have it connected to a digital port, the data will automaticlly appear on the screen as if I was on the terminal itself. Is that correct.

By the way, any tips on where I can purchase a data mod at a good or decent price.
