Folks, just would like to get your 2 cents in here. I'm trying to connect remotely to other wkstns via their unc path and for some reason, a lot of my wkstns can not be connected to. i use the path \\computername\c$. i've removed the workstation and added it back to the domain but still no avail. I use NT4.0 Server and W2k as clients. I thought it had something to do with WINS (just installed it in case that was the one causing it) but alas, it wasn't so. So could anyone please give me any suggestions as to why I can't connect to other wkstns? By the way, I could ping the wkstn, but I just could not connect to it. Thx.

You might try to use the workstations IP rather than the computer name. Kind of like \\192.168.1.1\c$. I've experienced that quite a bit with workstations in remote locations on different domains. Good luck.

I did try using the IP address but it still does not work. Any more ideas? Thanks.

In order to connect to a remote machines admin shares you must have Domain Admin rights, the machine must be on and the server service must be running on the machine in order to allow a connection.

In order to connect to any NT/Win2K machine the "Server Service" on that machine must be running. Some companies disable the server service on workstations because if the wstn is not sharing something there's no real good reason to leave it running - it just consumes system resources.

You should be able to see if this service is running through Server Manager. :) Bill

I found out what the problem was. File and Print sharing under network properties was not checked. As soon as I put a check mark to it, I could not connect to other computers. Thanks a lot again folks!
