I can't seem to connect to my merlin messaging with the GUI administration tool. I am able to ping it from my desktop. When I try to connect it sits there for a while and comes back saying that it can not connect. This is the same response that I get it a put random characters in the username and password field. Using the rs232 port I have verified that the password for sysadmin is correct. Is there a different login that needs to be used with the GUI? Any other idea why I can't connect?

Try connecting directly to the LAN port with the provided crossover adapter.

Log in as "sysadmin"

Password is the same numeric password that you use when logging into the administrator's mailbox.

Silly question but did you set the ip address of the mail to one in your range?

I just checked and I am using the same password as used to log into the administrator mailbox.
I have tried both using the crossover cable and on the lan. Both methods I can ping the Vmail just can't log in.

This might help you to connect locally first, it is a cut and paste of a Job Aid:

PC Admin of Merlin Messaging
Job Aid

v Make sure you have:

¢ Merlin Messaging R 2.0 or higher administered with Merlin Magix

¢ Laptop with ethernet adapter

¢ Cat 5 or D8W cross-over cable

¢ Crossover adapter included with MM Module

¢ DB9 to RJ45 adapter

v Make sure you're running:

¢ Appropriate Revision of MM System Administration Software

¢ Hyperterminal Session for Merlin Messaging set to:

¢ Set System Configuration Menu option 4 allows for IP setup
¢ Make the IP number one number different that the last IP of your PC

¢ Click on MM System Administer Software Icon
¢ Login at the assigned IP address of MM

¢ If MM will not be used on LAN by customer, leave IP# on MM alone
¢ Otherwise ask for IP# from customer and reset it

I have tried to follow the procedure that Tommy has provided, but all I get is garbage on my screen.

I am curious about the cross over cable. Should I be using a standard Ethernet crossover cable, or should I use a roll over cable, where pin 1 = 8, etc. Also, is the "Crossover adapter included with MM Module" necessary? Thanks.

The crossover cable OR standard ethernet cable with the crossover adapter is basically 568-A at one end and 568-B at the other. It is only needed when connecting directly from a PC to the Messaging; it you are connecting from the Messaging to a hub, use a standard ethernet cable.

Thanks Touch Tone Tommy. What I am trying to do is put an IP address on the system. I am using a DB9 to RJ45 adapter to go from COM1 on my computer to the rs232 (RJ45) port on the voicemail system. I have tried both straight trough and crossover cable, but just get garbage on the screen. Should I be using the LAN port on the MM instead? Any suggestions?

If you connect from your serial COM port in your computer to the RS232 in the VM,then you will need a straight 4 pair cable and an adapter 355AF(one side is RJ45 and the other is RS232),and use any hyper terminal software, and you will able to log in to the VM and change the IP address.I hope that helps. Good Luck!

You can also call into the auto attendant, and dial **3 at the auto attendant prompt to get to the internal modem. If all you want to do is set the IP address, that might be easier.
