I am working with 2 dell servers, one is running the Veritas backup exec. and the other I am trying to connect to (PowerVault 725N (Rackmount NAS Appliance) so that I can do a backup of the main drive. When I view the remote selections from the main backup screen the server is grayed out?? I can see and select other machines on the network with a username and password.

I have tried to connect to the server under network / connect to media server, it asks for a username and password. I get an error that says "Failed connecting to service"

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks!

ProSnap,

Do you have a B.E. remote agent installed for the PowerVault server?

Prosnap,
Did you get an answer to this issue? I ask because I'm having exactly the same problem.

I have two servers one is running Backup exec 9.1 as a media server and the other has the Remote agent installed on it but I can't select it from the media server. It just appears greyed out in the selection list and it doesn't even let me view it's properties.

Just for info they are both running windows server 2003 and the media server is set to be the domain controller while the other is just a member server.

If anyone has any ideas I'd really appreciate them.

You need a remote agent license installed for one thing.
Make sure you have pushed or manually install the remote agent. Im assuming the NAS device is windows powered.
Then you should be able to select the NAS device for backup

steveot,
Thanks very much for your reply. Yes the NAS is just a windows server 2003 member server.

I just have one question - Do I need a remote agent license if I have Backup Exec installed on the secondary server?

Not quite sure what you mean. On any media server if you want to backup a remote server you need some type of remote agent license. So if you have a full copy of Backup Exec on another server and want to backup that server remotely you will need the remote agent still.

I'm sorry I didn't make myself very clear but that is exactly what I wanted answered. Thanks very much for your help.

Yes you have to seprately purchase remote agent. Even with this you can take backup through N/W. Only this this is should me member of backup administrator or administrator on remote server
