Trying to connect to a magix admin via a USB port with adapter for usb to serial. get instant "cannot connect" error. Checked and re-checked the connections. usb to db9/db25 adapter, to 355 adapter to rj45 patch cable. changed Patch cable, can't really change any of the others. I have also changed baud rate to 1200 and such but it still won't connect. I have rebooted PC, the Magix and everything else. Any suggestions???

Get another laptop or PC with a regular serial port. The USB to serial port adapters do not always work very well. If the system has an 016 card - connect via modem.

I am sure that I will have to keep my old laptop on hand now to use for the Magix programming. I had bought an expensive adapter...thinking that the more expensive the better....silly me! Thanks for the interest!!!

I've been using a Belkin N10117 for at least five years without a single problem...ever. No buffer problems, no driver issues...nothing.

However, I still give the thumbs up for the old laptop/traditional serial approach. Old laptops have old modems which seem to alleviate a lot of remote connection problems.

did you go into windows sys mgr for for the device s new com port, ? did you load the usb drivers ?

cvrbob is on the right track - my version SPM only works on Com1 or Com2 and many USB adapter drivers will try to set it to a higher port. You can check the USB adapter using a comm program like Hyperterminal. It should "connect" if the port is actually open, and if you type on the keyboard the screen should do nothing. Then loop pin 2 of the RS232 back to pin 3 (doesn't matter whether it's 9 pin or 25 pin, pins 2 and 3 are receive and transmit data on both), and letters you type on the keyboard should now come back to the screen.

I have also had no problem w/ the serial to USB adapter - just bought the 9 to 25 pin device at Fry's Electronics. Almost all my problems are caused by modem speeds - gotta love the Legend/Magix motherboard!!
