equipment:
Nortel Merdidian 1, option 51 C, ver. 1711 rel 21 (issue 8).

I am looking to setup my pbx on our local LAN but I need assistance in locating documentation on completing this task. I need manuals or instructions on where to plug in my lan cable into the PBX. Also, Is it possible to connect a pc into one of the Comm ports on my PBX terminal and connect that way using hyperterminal or putty.

I understand networking very well but I am unfamiliar with the location of the ethernet connection on the actual pbx. So, Diagrams, pictures, manuals will be very helpful.

I have tried the forums but I assume I am using the wrong search words or criteria to find what I am looking for.

Thanks for any help or support.

Your Option 51 at release 21.xx won't support any form of IP connection.
One option is to have a computer with a serial COMM port connected to the PABX via the serial port. The computer would need to be on your network and accessible via whatever remote access tools you have such as Log me in, RDC, Team viewer etc.

The serial connection tends to be at 9600 baud, but you will need to check this out first.

firebird,

Is not even possible with an adapter that I have been reading about unless that is for other releases? I follow you on the comm port from my PC to a serial port on the PBX except for the serial port location on the actual PBX. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't my pbx terminal be already connected on that serial port or does it have more than one.

Could I connect a kvm switch to the serial connection that is connected to my terminal to allow a pc and the terminal to access the switch over the same serial connection but at separate times? Then run a hyperterminal (or other) session with all serial connections matching my pbx terminal setup.

Then I could setup remote desktop on that pc and access it from anywhere within my lan to access the pbx.

Let me know if I am on the right track,

thanks so much for the help

Your PABX will have a number of TTY ports available. The best thing to do is to list them all out in LD 22, or perhaps LD 37 under "STAT".

Any device that allows you to connect IP and then onto a serial port will do. As you have a Option 51 with a single processor, you could even connect to the core TTY port on the back behind the CPU card on the J22 port (I think?).
You might need a Null modem adapter.

These type of connections can be a bit flimsy, but it should be OK for you.

That's the information I needed to get this connected properly. I will test if out and see if I can get this connection up and going.

Thanks for the information
