I'm not sure what exactly to do, but here is my problem.

We are a medium sized company that has a little over a dozen macs, which make up less than 8% of the total computers within the organization. Needless to say, we've decided to upgrade to OS X, but there are some issues with how it connects to our network.
I install OS X, and setup a user (which has the same username/password as they did previously with OS9. I goto Go | Connect to a Server... and I pick the main appletalk server. Then it asks me for the username/pw. I put that in and it works great. I can see everything I need to- and I have the correct priviladges for my user account.

**** BUT... ****

After I restart the computer and try it again (and no matter WHAT I DO) when I login the next time I have guest level access, even though I'm using my username/pw (using a keychain). If I try to manually RE-type in the password it gives me the error, "You have entered more characters than the maximum number allowed." I don't even get to type in more than one letter before that message pops up.

I have tried all the options, turn off/on clear text, turn off/on SSL, set user as 'Able to login from Windows' in the 10.2 User menu (but this happens in 10.1 also)...

The only thing that fixes this is to create a new user, and then login as the new user, and connect to the main appletalk share again. But it only works once, maybe twice, before it takes away my rights again.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Ok, I'm responding to my own topic, but anyway- I figured it out (I think).

If you change it to send using clear text, THEN click cancel when logging in, THEN try to log back in... that should work. At least it did for me so far.

sigh... now if only it could be more secure... =/

Here's another option - forget about appletalk.

Samba (SMB) file sharing can be done in OSX. I did it manually in OSX 10.1.5 and I think it is automatic in OSX 10.2 (Jaguar).

Samba allows a Mac to use MS Windows native file shares.

I'm having exactly the same problem, except I can't even choose to tick my "would you like to add a keychain" as it is not available ! So every time I reboot I have to go throught the process of 'Connect to a Server... pick the main appletalk server' etc etc.

Any ideas ?

I am using 10.3 connecting to a Windows 2000 server via SMB share.

Also using Active Directory intergration, with 10.3 and Active Directory a local user needs to be setup exactly the same as the Domain user account for it to authenicate with the Domain Controllers.

This all works fine but I am still getting maximum password errors, it will still only allow 8 characters maximum.

Any ideas? I am still trying to figure out if it is a restriction from Mac side or the Windows share side of things.

any help is much appreciated
Vern
