Connecting Microsoft Roundtable to BCM50 - no dial tone

Hello,

We are having problems connecting a Microsoft Roundtable (Polycom CX5000) unit to our Nortel BCM50 PBX.

The Roundtable's phone line icon shows as on/available when the phone cable is plugged in, but there is no dial tone and we are unable to dial/call either internal extensions or outside numbers.

The current Nortel handset plugged into the same port works fine, so it does not seem to be the port, cable or RJ11 to RJ45 adapter.

Even so, we have changed ports, cables, RJ11 to RJ45 adapters, etc - all to no avail.

I have also reset, updated and reconfigured the Roundtable unit a few times, all with the same result.

Can anyone help shed any light on this - or is the Rountable incompatible with the BCM50 or maybe just faulty?

Many thanks,
Steve

Only the Norstar Conferencing Unit will work on a digital port of the BCM

Otherwise you need an ATA/ Analog port for any analog equipment.
Your BCM50 is equipped with 4 ports but you need a license to activate them, check your license list to see if any are activated then get a tech in to add another jack insert in your board room.

That device looks to be a SIP based multi media piece of hardware. If that's the case, it won't work at all on your BCM. Nortel never did implement the 3rd party licensing feature that you would need for that unit.

So unless it has an analog interface (highly doubtful) you're simply SOL. Even if you tried some king of gateway to make it work, an analog connection wouldn't work very well at all for videoconferencing.

Hi curlycord and telcodog,

Thanks for the replies.

Curlycord - I guess the BCM50 analogue ports are licensed and activated (I inherited the system with no documentation), since there is one analogue fax machine and one analogue franking (postage) machine, and they are both working fine.

The BCM50 seems to register the Roundtable as an analogue device, but lists it as inactive.

Telcodog - the Roundtable is a multimedia / video conferencing unit, but we're using this functionality via its USB connection to a laptop which uses it as a 360-degree webcam in Skype/Lync. The Roundtable also definitely has an analogue port (RJ11) which when connected to a normal BT (phone) socket works fine as an analogue phone - the difficulty with our unit is that it doesn't seem to like the analogue line as presented by the BCM50.

I have tried with both BT/RJ11 to RJ54 Secondary and Master adapters, but that doesn't seem to make a difference.

Is there anything I can do on the BCM50 itself, or is that it?

Many thanks for yoiur help so far!

Steve

The BCM or any system does not acknowledge any analog device because that's what they are, just analog.
Systems only acknowledges proprietary equipment, i.e. Nortel systems can only see Nortel digital sets or IP sets.

Look at your Keycodes heading in programming to see how many Int Analog Station are activated.....4 is the maximum.
Some BCM's come out of the box with only 2 activated.

If unsure on programming call in a tech.

You can always test your Polycom using the Postage port on the BCM.

Thanks curlycord.

I'll be at that office later in the week and will try again using the franking machine's port, as suggested.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi curlycord/telcodog,

Just a quick line to say I managed to fix the issue by assigning the Polycom/Roundtable unit to the BCM50 analogue port used by our franking machine, and trying out different RJ11 to RJ45 cables and Secondary PABX adapters.

BTW, our BCM50 did have only 2 analogue ports licenced and active.

Thanks for all your help.
Steve
