I have a Windows 2000 Server with a SCSI connected External storage array, I am replacing that server with a new Windows 2003 server, and will be connecting the external storage array to that server. My question is will the file access rights be lost when I connect the storage array to the new server?

Is this an external RAID cabinet, or is it a SAN? Permissions probably won't be an issue if the servers are in the same domain, but you need to make sure the array itself is maintained between servers.

It is an external RAID array. It is not a SAN. The domain is going to be the same.

NTFS Permission are part of the file system and stored on the Disk. Share Permission are managed by the OS. You will not lose the NTFS Permission, but you will lose the shares as the new OS doesn't know they exist. In this case I would document what share you have and recreate them when you connect the drive to the new OS.
Here is a gotcha to consider, The default share permission on Win 2000 is Everyone/Full - On Win 2003 it is Everyone/Read. Make sure you make appropriate changes.

Also, do not format the drive on the new OS (you probably know that already). Just rescan and you will see the drive, you may have to add or change the drive letter.

You also said it is an external RAID Array. Is it hardware RAID or Software? If Hardware, you should not be a problem, follow vendor instructions. If MS Software you will have to export the DISK Key from the Registry to the New Server.

It is hardware RAID. I avoid software RAID if at all possible.
