We have an office in another state and would like to merge the 2 8x24 Norstar systems together so we can reduce long distance charges and able to transfer calls. Can this be done with the E&M/DISA Trunk cartridge?

Does the 2 lines on the cartridge mean I can have 2 lines to use for transfering and calling?

Can we add more then 1 cartridge to add more lines?

Will we be able to dial extensions of the other office?

How do we go about getting a E&M line and how much does it cost?

We also will be getting a 3rd location and would like to do the same thing. Can all three locations be connected with the E&M lines using the 8x24 Norstars?

E&M cards will do it for you. Yes, each card has two line capability so that's two lines of communication between the two sites. So each site has to have the same amount of cards. Two on one side, two on the other.

You will build target lines for each extension on each side with the received digits matching the extension number.

A. Configuration – Show
1. Trk/ Line Data – Show
Show line: Dial in 081 (this is your first target line) Target lines number 081-184
Rec’d #: None – Press Change
Rec’d #: dial in the first extension number.
Then press Next
Line Data – Show
Line Type: Public – Press Change
Private To: dial the ext # you want to have the target line show up on.
Press Next
PrimeSet: dial in the extension number again– Next
Aux: Ringer: Y – Next
Auto Privacy: Y – Next

Show line: dial the next target line number 082
Program one target line for each DID. Then assign the target line to the phone (see below):

Assigning the Line:

Press your Header button until you see:
A.Configuration
1. Trk/ Line data – Next
2. Line Access – Show
Show set: dial the ext. number
Line assignment – Show
No lines assigned
Press Add
Add Line: dial in target line number (ie., 081)

Your E&M trunks will be in a line pool with an access code assigned. When either side wants to talk with the other side, they will dial the access code and technically get intercom tone of the other side. They will then dial the extension number they want. The digits that they dial will be received on the target line built for that extension and will ring the phone on the button the target line is assigned to. This way the person at that phone will know it is a call from the other side.

I don't know how much they are. You will have to call your local telco. You will be ordering, Type II, 4 pair, 8 wire circuits. Norstar will not do Type I

Oh and the cards can only be installed in trunk mods so if necessary you can add a 6 port copper expansion card to the 8X24. Each trunk mod has three slots available for cards. So if you put three E&M cards in a trunk mod you have 6 lines of communication. Just remember that you have to match it on the other side.

Also when you order the circuits from telco you will be telling them where point A is and where point B is. MRoberts

why not choose a VOIP solution, you can use an already existing data link between offices or you could order frame relay and link offices for voice and data.

Do you presently have etiher T-1 or PRI on your 8X24's? You could use either to carry tie lines between locations and then not have to add another trunk module for E&M cards. then adding another system would be easier, just designate channels in the case of T-1 or assign the outgoing call as tie in the case of PRI. Look in your Installer Guide for details under networking.

Also what is your software version? the version may limit your options.

We have DR5 at both locations. The main office has frame relay for internet and the other office just has a ISDN line configured for internet. Both systems do not have a trunk module so none is setup for voice networking right now.

Does the 8x24 only support E&M lines or can it support T1 and ISDN?

Cost wise I think installing a E&M line would be less then getting a 2nd ISDN or T1 line. Do phone companies even install E&M lines anymore or do they just do T1 and ISDN?

A high speed DSL or Cable internet feed will provide IP trunking for you. You do not have to only consider T1 or PRI. Check you MCK products.

I am sorry I have to confess a brain dump. the PRI is not available for earlier software than 4.0 and the DTI (t-1 card) is not supported earlier than MICS but the 8X24 can support E&M cards on a copper trunk module.

You would have to contact your local phone company to see if they offer the service. Like ARR says, check the MCK products and one might serve you.

You may also look at t-1 channel bank between the sites, especially if you need data between sites. There are manufactururs such as MICOM that offer E&M channels as part of a multiplexed data link between sights, (I've seen them run 2 tie lines on a 56 K data trunk)

Yu may have to just look at upgrading the 8X24's to MICS and then get a t-1 or a fractional t-1 or even PRI's. There are many possible solutions, I am giving you just a few here. JerryReeve
