Connectin WinSPM (R8) to Admin Port (Direct)

People, could someone help please. i am trying to set up a dirrect connection from a PC to Merlin magix box. i got WinSPM (R8), i got 355A (male), i got DB25 to DB9 from radioshack (part #26-265B) pinout (from the back of the box)

and a CAT5 cable.
it does not work! (connection failed) i saw multiple posts with pinouts etc. unfortunately i am not in a position to make my own cable - we moved into a space and i need to just program the system once - i'll just buy what is needed. Do i have the right setup? do i use cat5 or some other cable? does my DB26 to DB9 connector have the right pinout?

any help is appreciated. this is very frustrating.

It appears that your DB-9 to DB-25 adapter is correct. If your CAT-5e cable is not a cross-over cable, this should work correctly. Confirm you have the right settings on your PC for speed and parity etc.

jlshelton, the cable is a regular cat5 (not a crossover). just checked the settings - N,8,1,2400, flow control is none....still no luck...any ideas? thank you.

The connector should be a 355AF. Also check that the COM port is correct.

You could always do an internal connection as well via an analog station port if available. Speed differences are negligible.

You can use Hyperterminal (1200 baud, 8 data, 1 stop, no parity)and hook up to the SMDR port and see if you are getting the SMDR info. That would at least tell you if your Cable And 355A are working OK. It could be a Bad admin port.

The ONLY difference between the 355A and 355AF is one is male and one is female and I have used Both sucessfully

If the Admin port is hung you can reset the port through an operator's MLX phone as well. Follow the onscreen Maintenance --> Port --> etc. menu options I believe. That or just plug into an analog phone line somewhere and dial *10 in WinSPM to get access to the Merlin.

You don't need a cat5 to connect, use a standard grey 4 pair mounting cord like you would use on a MLX type set.
