Ok so i got a sun 220r server off craiglsit and i am trying to connect to it via my laptop. I know this is a newbie question but how do it without a serial port on my laptop? Also can I do an ethernet connection?

You will most likely need to connect to the serial console first to configure the ethernet connection, so you'll still be stuck. You can get USB to serial adapters I believe? Or a micro serial server which allows you to connect to the serial console via Ethernet; an expensive option perhaps but useful if you need to get to the console remotely.

Annihilannic.

ok so once i have a usb to 25pin serial adaptor what do ii do?

I believe once you have the adapter that Annihilannic mentioned (USB to Serial), you can use the windows app, hyperterminal to get into the servers console

Ok thanks for the advice Im ordering an adapter to let me connect to the serial port via ethernet. Also does anyone know anything about ReflectionX?

What do you want to know?
The serial you would need would be a DB-9 to USB, not a 25 pin. Why not hook a monitor, keyboard and mouse to it? I would actually get a VT100 for it---they're pretty cheap (the DEC ones).

well considering i only paid $80 for the server itself but i have all the pieces i think i need to get lined up.. I found out i need a sun serial adapter to run to a de9 -> rj45 to my serial->USB adapter. sound about right?

Yes---but I have used DEC adapters as well. Those are very cheap. You could just Google the pinouts and make one, too.
