WinXPPro running MSN, IE6, Opera, or Netscape. I can't connect with AOL AIM, I can ping via name or IP address anything on the web.

Network is very simple: Win2k machine connects via ISDN, and shares the connection across a Hub (via remote disconnect server) not ICS. This has worked with no issue for over 2 years, now I cannot connect with the XP machine. Loaded opera last night and still couldn't connect. IE6 had issues about 3 months ago, so I loaded MSN, now nothing connects except AIM or any program not using web browser.

I have used FAQ 779,4625 with no avail.

I have run Spybot 13 and cleared out all 7 items with no avail.

I have run a virus scan with no issues found.

Normally I would be able to fix problems like this, but since it connecting to the net with AIM, and Mcafee can update, I am at a loss.

Any advise would be helpful...

If this is the same as the winsockfix, then I did this and it doesn't help, I also did this anyway and it doesn't help.

Thanks though...any other thoughts?

Joey

My appologize, I did what you recommended and it did not work.

Yes I can and was able to/always have been able to ping address' such as as well as pinging by IP address 216.239.39.99

I just can't view any web sites via any browser, but I can use AOL's instant messanger....

No apologies necessary, I just wanted the technical side of things clear.

Could you do an ipconfig /all and post them here?

Thanks,
Bill Castner

Tell me a little about your firewall, if any, and your antivirus program, if any.

If using McAfee for the firewall, set the base setting to 'Allow all' or whatever the non-filtered setting is described, and test again.

On the pc with the issue, there is no firewall used. Antivirus is Mcafee V7.

Win2k machine that is connected to ISP = Zonealarm Pro, but I have tried it even shut down with not change in effect. Also running Mcafee V7.

Latest DAT's on both.

I have a Win2k Laptop that is also connect to the network and able to surf web with no issues.

Sorry to bother you again, but an ipconfig from the Win2k box as well?

This is what bothers me:

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

The Win2k box has to be acting as either in an ICS role. There is a NAT DHCP and DNS proxy server role being played, likely by the Win2k server.
Win2k machine connects via ISDN, and shares the connection across a Hub (via remote disconnect server) not ICS.

Please explain a little more about the remote disconnect server.

It looks like you have confounded the binding order.

1. Disable through Device Manager adapter:

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected
Description . . . . . . . . . . . : CNet PRO200 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapte
r
Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-80-AD-04-5E-15

Reboot.

2. Turn off ICS on all existing bindings.

3. Make your LAN connection.

4. See:

Okay, I disable the adapter 2

ICS is turned on for the ISDN modem (forgot about that).
the Microsoft link you sent me, is that for the XP box being the pc connected to the ISP? If so, that will not work, it only has a Lan drop to it.

If that isn't the case, it just confused me(of course that isn't hard these days)

Since this is a Win2k box, would the reboot be nessesary after disabling the Adapter 2?

I hope neither of us gets confused here.

The underlying problem is that you had two physical adapters:

Description : CNet PRO200 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (Not being used, now disabled)
Description : 3Com 3C918 Integrated Fast Ethernet (your LAN connection, and ICS Host. This looks fine.

The Internet side:
Description: NOC Extranet Access Adapter (the modem)
PPP adapter zzzip.net (the interface)

This looks fine. In the following, point to the PPP adapter and not the physical ISDN modem:

I will let Steve Winograd take it from here:

Ok, I have ICS for the modem connection already set up, forgot that in the first post. I have disabled adapter 2, and have now rebooted (storm can through and didn't want to lose power).

Everything else is set the same as it was before and it still doesn't work (nothing on network has changed in months).

May be unrelated, but Friday I was having pc issues (very slow running) so I rebooted after that my VPN cleint will no longer connect to company network and that may or may not have been the same issue that is now effecting XP box. I am not sure the last time my wife tried to access the internet.

Make certain under all workstations that you do not have a Proxy enabled. Look under Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections, LAN Settings.

Any fix for this? I have similar problem on friends computer... Able to connect to internet via AOL Dialup..but can't surf web! I get the whole you got mail hoopla, but when I want to surf can't do it. He is running Win98, any suggestion would be appreciated!

To explain my fix is weird to say the least. I reimaged the drive, and still could not connect with anything expect Instant messanger, so I made this computer the primary internet computer and now all is well it sees the internet fine and all other computer still see the internet fine. The only thing I can think of is some kind of a NIC card issue, but I did replace the NIC once already on both computers and it did not make any difference.
