Hello All,

I'm running IE6 and WinXP on a laptop. I made a manual dial-up connection, and this appears to work fine, ie it does the "Verifying Password" bit OK, then a speech bubble pops up from the internet icon in the system tray saying "Netaccess is connected at 40.2 Kbps"
That all comes to nothing though, when I try to surf in IE6, because all I get is the "Cannot Find Server" error page, and a Dialog box saying "Internet Explorer could not open the Search Page".

I've been through the connection creation process step-by-step with my Phone Company/ISP and confirmed that the phone number and DNS addresses are correct.

They had me enter the following at the DOS-prompt:

C:\netsh int ip reset c:\tcpipreset.txt

and then restart - no effect.

I'm getting good connection speed reported when I check the connection status, and there's a few Kb of data received, but still no sites loaded at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks for replying, ambermetal :)

I don't know - how do I find out what it is and what it should be?

Sounds like a Led Zep song!

You better ask your isp first. Ask them if you need to enter a proxy, cos most proxies are automatically set... Depends on your ISP. If a proxy is needed ask their tech support to guide you through it, it's fairly simple. If not, have you tried doing anything else other than use IE? Like do you use msn or any other instant messaging stuff, see if they could work. If they could it would be your IE problem, if not then it might be your connection problem...

Ambermetal the stupid intern...

Part of the process I went through with my ISP helpdesk was to ensure that the Automatic Configuration and Proxy settings were unchecked in the Connections/Settings tab.

I don't have any other browsers on my laptop, so I'm unable to check that angle at present. :-(

Do you have a hotmail account? Or msn account? Cos if i'm not wrong WinXP comes with windows messenger preinstalled, or in other words, MSN messenger is or should be there to try out.

You're right, of course! ... My D'OH! [blush]

I have MSN messenger, but I don't have a hotmail or msn account -how do I use MSN messenger instead of IE6?

Urrrr i cant do much without physical contact... And yeah i know that sounded dirty... Could you get your isp to send technical support over to help? Many apologies for not being of much help...

No apologies needed, good buddy [2thumbsup]

Your hint about MSN got me trying other methods: at least I can eliminate a few more suspects before I call out the ISP guy or send my laptop back to the shop!

Thanks for your replies => *

In the olden days when I did tech support for an ISP, one of the most common causes of this issue was multiple instances of wsock32.dll being present on the system. Not sure if this still holds true with XP, but might be worth a look.

Best regards, thelp
