Connect shared printers to the PDC or a work station

I recently upgraded to server2003 r2. On my old 2k server network I had my printers connected to a regular 2K box I called printers on the network and was using that as a print server but didn't have server software installed. now with server2003 the printers are not working right. I have 100 users roming proflies and 40 computers with 5 printers would the printers work better shared through the server2003 PDC or do you recomend adding a real print server?

Where are you getting a "PDC" that is an NT4 box. In 2003 all domain controllers are peers, they are just DCs.

Please explain what you mean by a "real print server." A properly configured server be it a DC or member server is a real print server.

What I ment before about a real print server was I had a workstation named (printers) on the domain. I had my network printers connected to that machine so I sort of used a work station as a print server. Probably not the best way to share printers. Sorry for not being clear enought.

I replaced a 2k server with a 2003 server. We have only one server its roll is a domain controller for our network. If I have the server in place with users connecting to it can I add the roll of a print server while others are connected? I know I might have to reboot after the roll is added. Once that roll is added I can control the 5 networked printers from the server. My question is will that be too much of a load on one server? I have 40 computers 100 users with roming profiles.

All you need to do is create connections to the printers on the server, then share those connections and have your users use those shared connections.

You can quickly and easily setup the printers on the workstations using VBScript.

I will try what Mark said. Add the printers to the server and share them. Not install the print server roll to the server.

This is a police department and they get a bit crazy when I shut off the server. I can add the printers without any interuption.

Using the one domain controller to run the roaming profiles and printers should fix some of my issues.
