Connect iPhones to Exchange

Consider the iPhone as a poor relation to a Windows Mobile device. Use IMAP as a poor relation to, well...anything.

You'll need to install/start the IMAP service on Exchange and open it on your firewall. Other than that, not much to say.

Apple has licensed Exchange Active Sync, but neither side has said whether it's going to be used for the iPhone.

if your Exchange server is well behind your firewall, and you have either PPTP or L2TP vpn installed you can get access to the IMAP with reasonable safety.

I have a few people here using it. There are a couple caveats, such as only mailboxes below inbox are accessible. No calendar or contact synchronization.

Outlook web works on it well enough

So heres what Ive got:

IMAP is enabled and services have been restarted
RPC over HTTP is enabled
OWA is enabled

I have opened port 143 on our router to hit our Exchange box.

Ive tried everything under the IMAP and Exchange account creation on the phone and I get the same error:

The IMAP server "mail.ourdomain.com" is not responding...

Using a standard PC / Outlook / IMAP, can you get to Exchange?

I'll have to set it up at home, havent tried with Outlook and IMAP yet. Heres the question though, do I need to create an IMAP connector like I did with POP or does such a thing not exist?

have you tried telnet 143 to you router that is doing the passthrough/proxy to Exchange's IMAP?

You shouldn't need a connector. I hope you are using SSL with your imap and requiring SMTP authentication. Cuz you just unhid your exchange server...

SecureIMAP isn't a requirement but is a good idea. SMTP auth - VPN is an option.

yeah we use a PPTP vpn for the iPhones.
Bummer though because DNS isn't working right, so you have to VPN in, get mail, then log out. While on the VPN there is no DNS resolution...

Hardly a biz class solution, but for those who had to have it...
