I have successfully installed 8i Personal Edition rel 3 (8.1.7) on a stand-alone
Windows98 PC. I can start instance and database, however only when using the
INTERNAL login.

According to Oracle documentation the preferred login is:

connect / as sysdba

However doing so results in:

ORA-01031: insufficient privileges

As far as I understand this method inherits dba privileges from the operating system
user (user group). Is this possible for Windows98 platform ?

your username has to be part of the dba group. do a search on metalink there is a document on how to do it step by step
its a hardcoded name so you cant have any old group name.

Thanks MeyersG.

Lots of documents, I'll better start browsing !

Hello, Mockenrue. I am just starting to learn Oracle and like you installed 8i pers. edition on a Windows 98 Pentium II P200. I am wondering where this metalink is ? Just posted my question on tek-tips. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Metalink is at: , but you have to register. There is a wealth of Oracle articles, documents there.

Regarding my initial question, I have read several articles, FAQs etc but have not found an answer. I use the old-fashioned CONNECT INTERNAL since.
