Greetings,

My company will be subletting our building to another company. The building is wired for networking, but only has 1 broadband internet connection. We want to keep our networks separate for security purposes, but would like to share the internet connection. What hardware is required in order to do this?

Thank you,

Well, yes....but a router will not prevent us from accessing each others files. We need to share an internet connection, not files.

If you keep separate subnets and do not allow traffic from one subnet to the other, but allow traffic out to the Internet... problem solved.

Ok, we currently have a Linksys BEFSR11 cable/dsl router which does not allow us to do this (I think). Can you suggest a better router with these capabilities?

I assume the BEFSR11 1-port router now feeds a switch. All you need to do is to (if necessary) add an additional switch, run a cable from a free port on the existing switch to the uplink port on the new switch.

All PCs on the switch would be assigned static IPs in the range 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.0.254. In the TCP/IP Properties for these subnetted PCs the default Gateway address would be that of the BEFSR11, which out of the box is 192.168.1.1.

This will give them internet access but will deny them traffic from your local lan.
