I am trying to set up Windows 2000 Advanced Server as a client and a server, all on one machine. (I don't need to connect to any other machines except the internet by phone line).

I am having trouble setting up Active Directory, general network problem, and I'm getting a lot of Event errors. I cannot set up DNS because RPC is a dependency, and that is producing a message 'RPC thread failed to start' error code C0040007.

Could anyone give me clear instructions to help me set up DNS properly. I've done all the obvious things!

for starters, if you don't need to connect to any other machines, why do you need AD? You can install DNS on a standalone server if you want....

Are you trying to setup a test network? It would be better if you had other pc's to connect to. If not, then I give the floor to bronto, why the need for ad? Glen A. Johnson

Have you got any NIC in your machine?
Microsoft DNS Server doesn´t work if your server don´t have a NIC.

I need to set up some services like Netscape Directory services, and various others, then I am going to run some client software that uses the services, on the same machine. It's for educational purposes.

I only have one network card, which could cause a problem.

I thought I'd need DNS to set this up.

You'd need DNS if you needed to set up AD, but I don't think that will be necessary in your case.

What services are needed? Maybe we can give some pointers. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson
