I need to rename the default communities for SNMP, private and public. I cannot see anything in the command structure I would use to rename the existing communities (using 'configure snmpv3 add community'). The only options are add or delete for the most part after snmpv3 in the command. I also tried 'configue snmpv3 delete community private' and also public, to delete the communitie in an attempt to add new ones with different names. I receive configuration aborted messages on the console, and the command is unable to successfully complete trying to delete existing communities.

I'm looking for suggestions to change the default community names under SNMPv3, or add new ones with different names.

See if the communities actually exist:

Type in "show management" and see how many communities are listed as RO/RW. You should see something like:

Total Read Only Communities : 1
Total Read Write Communities : 1

If you issue "show snmpv3 community" you should be able to see them:

Community Index : private
Community Name : private
Security Name : v1v2c_rw
Context EngineID : 80:00:07:7c:03:02:04:96:34:95:c4
Context Name :
Transport Tag :
Storage Type : NonVolatile
Row Status : Active

Community Index : public
Community Name : public
Security Name : v1v2c_ro
Context EngineID : 80:00:07:7c:03:02:04:96:34:95:c4
Context Name :
Transport Tag :
Storage Type : NonVolatile
Row Status : Active

I was able to delete public off the switch using:
configure snmpv3 delete community public

After that I added it back using:
configure snmp add community readonly public

I know that isn't exactly what you were looking for...but maybe that'll point you in the right direction.

This is the message I receive trying to delete public or private communities.
configure snmpv3 delete community private
Error: Unable to delete community
Configuration failed on backup MSM, command execution aborted!

On another extreme switch (just configured) I am able to do so. On this switch where I cannot successfully execute the command I am able to run

disable snmp community public

and then I just add another community with a different name and read only.
