hi everyone.

i'm trying to secure our system from spammer and wondering how to do it/setup.

i got a tech doc from ibm but i need more clarifications:

- this parameters are within sendmail.cf file?
- original line in-the-file sendmail.cf: #DSmailer:relayhostname.
do i have to change it with smtp and the name of my server (system)?
- any suggestion/s on how to test it and make sure it's working?

-----------------------------------------------------------
this is what i got from ibm site:

Configuring for relay DS

When a workstation that is behind a firewall needs to send and receive Internet mail, the DS and DM variables are used. The comments for the DS entry describe the server defined there as a Smart Relay. A Smart Relay is a system that has access to a working DNS, and has Internet connectivity so that it is able to make a network connection and deliver the mail. Typically, the DS is a firewall, or a system that is trusted by the firewall.

The DS options would be defined, as follows:

DSsmtp:firewall.lab.net
or

DSsmtp:[1.1.1.99] (If an IP address is used, it must be in square brackets.)

thanks in advance

i think, the best description would-be CONFIGURING ANTI-SPAM IN AIX 4.2 (AIX 4.3.3 somewhat a bit different).

aixqueen,

thank you, but i think we have same reference docs at-hand from IBM sites. unfortunately, these doesn't solve the problem.

i tried using telnet with hostname/ip_add at port 25 but seems to me, i can still get into the system even i already specified relay host in a separate table for checking. i can not test "the access denied".

is anybody know how to test it and confirm that it doesn't give you access to the system?

thanks in advance.

aixqueen,

Opssss! sorry - YEAH! i tried AIX 4.3.3 and 4.3.2, they're both running great!

but when i tried it with AIX 4.2 - it doesn't do anything. right now, I keep on trying other parameter considerations.

It was a different version of sendmail......so not sure...I thought the advanced anti spam features of sendmail happened at sendmail 8.9.1 not 8.8 which I think is what you have at 4.2 ......but maybe someone else knows if there was a workaround...maybe even the sendmail newsgroup?
sorry

To determine the version of sendmail running on the system:
telnet localhost 25
You should see something like this:

Connected to loopback.
Escape character is '^]'.
220 lyons.bpsolutions.net ESMTP Sendmail AIX4.3/8.9.3/8.9.3;
Thu, 9 Dec 1999 15:26:55 -060

aixqueen (TechnicalUser),

thank you.

... yes! i might try the user/newsgroup.

btw, my sendmail version AIX4.2/UCB 8.7. which i believe -quite old.

to NO avail....i tried newsgroup...

anybody know or have something as a workaround to fix "SPAM" in AIX 4.2?

thank you.

I am not sure, but I believe you can upgrade your sendmail to the newer version and then configure it...but it may take work............

Others have said
Sendmail in AIX 4.2. is too old for reliable anti-spam measures. Either
upgrade AIX to at least 4.3.2

or get a more recent sendmail from:
