Hi -

How would I configure an AIX 5.1 box to use sendmail to an exchange server on an internal network?

I've configured the /etc/hosts file with an entry that points to the IP for the exchange server. The name in the hosts file is isi28.

I've never used sendmail before and the man pages are a little difficult to pore over.

Anyone have any notes on how to do a simple setup for a quick internal email ability?

i think from memory that you need to amend the DS entry in /etc/sendmail.cf i.e. DSisi28

Yep. I was reading another post here and I modified that file with the proper DSisi28 statement. I was also reading that I had to run a command m4 /etc/mail/sendmail.mc > /etc/mail/sendmail.cf to recompile it but the sendmail.mc file doesn't exist on the system.

I was thinking about downloading sendmail again and reinstalling it. Thoughts?

I'm not sure on the syntax for sending out a basic message from the command line. I typed in sendmail and I get a blinking cursor at the next line.

Just do the DS entry like tempest92 says, you don't need to recompile the .cf file. Noone in their right mind does that anyway.

Syntax for sending mail from a command line is simple:

"mail username@domain.tld"

You'll be prompted for a subject, and the text. Enter a period on a blank line to finish.

Alternatively, you can also mail text files out without interactivity:

cat /etc/passwd | mail -s "l33t hax" username@domain.tld

Ok yep I followed that and the syntax worked.

The following was sent to the screen after a few:

No local mailer defined
QueueDirectory (Q) option must be set

Then a blank line. I typed '.' to get back to a prompt.
