Configure Administrative Virtual Server, Error1057 can't query sptimer

I have installed SQL server 2000 and have also installed Sharepoint Team Services V2. I cannot get past this error, 'System Error 1057 while trying to query service "SPTimer"'.

This happens after I have created a new application pool and given a new name and password in the Configure Administrative Virtual Server page. When I click next I get the error.

What is the problem, and how do I fix it?

I am getting exactly the same symptoms, I will keep you updated if I find a fix

I was getting the same error until I used a fully qualified user (ie MACHINE\USERNAME or DOMAIN\USERNAME). Once I used the qualified name, it passed right through.
