I don't understand. How do I allow access to a folder that, in html, would be ..\folder. I can't see my gifs in folder apache\images\image.gif referenced from apache\docRoot\index.html Isn't this accomplished with the <directory> directive...what gives?
 
It appears you want an ALIAS directive here...

You want to access a folder outside of your HTML Root...

so lets take:

/home/ as the HTML root
and
/opt/blah/folder as the folder you want to access

Alias /opt/blah/folder/ /folder/

this will allow to access the contents of /opt/blah/folder

make sense now?

wow that was almost too easy. i was trying to reference the folder with ../ in an html page. guess that was the prob. thank you.
