We have an NEC 2000 IPS PBX and I have been asked by several users how to get out of a conference call on the following scenario:
User has a call in progress and wants to conference 3rd person in, user press transfer, dial the number and wait for a response before pressing conf but they get VM on the third person's call. Is there a way to get out of that without dropping the first call?

If you havent pressed the conference key you can press the transfer key again to get the original caller back, and that will disconnect the user you called which has gone to voicemail.

what kind of mail? if its an active voice then press ***.

If you just do as stated above the call will still be attached.

When your call reaches voice mail hit the recall key then transfer and you will be back to the original party and can hit transfer again and try the next call.

ok, once the VM picks up, the only option that worked out of all the given ideas was the recall and transfer.
Transfer will work only if VM has not yet picked up and *** didn't work.

Thanks everyone for your valuable answers.
