Conditionally format adjacent column

Any ideas on how to conditionally format an adjacent column?

I need to remind users to fill in, say, column D, if column C contains the word "NEW".

I could use an IF statement, but I prefer to use conditional formatting to highlight the cell.

Any thoughts?

Use 'Formula Is' instead of 'Cell Value Is'

Use '=SEARCH("new",$C1,1)>0' as the condition

Under FORMAT, there is an option CONDITIONAL FORMATTING. You can specify what Excel has to look for and change the colour of the adjacent cell, depending on your criteria.
