HI,

We have a very strange DNS problem which we cannot rectify.

When IPCONFIG /ALL command is used on the server it brings up 2 domain names in the DNS suffix search list, the first being fine the second only shows up as co.uk as shown below:

domain.co.uk
co.uk

Now when a ping is sent to a workstation on the network, for example, ASHLEY, the hostname gets resolved as ASHLEY.CO.UK and brings up an external IP address.

if you try ping ashley.domain.co.uk it cannot resolve hostname.

We have removed all zones, removed the DNS service completely, reloaded the DNS service and the zones but we get exactly the same issue everytime.

Is there a way to remove the co.uk entry in the suffix search list, and a way to find out where this entry is coming from?

Your help would be appreciated.

Regards

JF

Check the DNS suffix search list on the server itself. RC My Network Places > Properties > RC the NIC connection > Properties > DC internet Protocol > Advanced > DNS. If you see the co.uk listing here remove it. OK out of all open windows, you may need to reboot. Not too sure what could be causing this unless someone is entering this on the server. You can also check DHCP scope options to see if something is passed out to the clients. Hope this helps...

Hi Code666,

Yeah, I checked that out already and the domain.co.uk is listed on the server and all the workstations in the DNS suffix for this connection.

When you said "someone may be entering this on the server" how and where?

The server has ran fine on the current configuration for well over 18months. DHCP options are fine. Just bombed out about 1 week ago with no apparent changes to the server settings or the network configuration!

Any other ideas?

JF
