I just installed a new 128 Mb RAM module into a Compaq Prosignia 150 laptop; however the computer did not recognize the new memory. The laptop continued to fail to recognize the new RAM after several reinstallations. I eventually gave up after the computer refused to boot. I installed the correct RAM model number based on the RAM configurator on PNY's website. What could be the problem?

I checked out crucial's website. Crucial only sells 64 Mb modules; however, if you look at the system info for the Compaq Prosignia on the same webpage it states that the maximum memory is 192Mb (the 64 Mbs onboard + a 128 Mb module). The maximum memory of 192Mb is confirmed in the computer user manual as well as on Kingston and Viking's websites.

Yes, otter you are correct. The manual does state that you can use 32, 64, and 128MB DIMMS as long as you don't exceed 192MB.

However, Compaq never sold a Prosignia 150 with more than 64MB of RAM. Furthermore, if you try and purchase memory directly from them for this notebook, they only give you two options: 32MB and 64MB.

See for yourself:

This may be a matter you'll want to clear up directly with Compaq. I'm guessing what happened is that one of the designers for that model was a bit too optimistic that a future BIOS upgrade would allow a 128MB DIMM. Perhaps the system was never tested to accept one, which explains why Compaq doesn't offer it as an option. Your last hope might be to try the 128MB stick by itself. If it still doesn't work, then you're probably out of luck...
